Nepal joined the United Nations in 1955 and has maintained active participation in UN peacekeeping missions, contributing over 150,000 personnel to date.
Nepal advocates for the interests of landlocked and least developed countries within UN frameworks and supports UN reform for more equitable representation. The Peace Corps established operations in Nepal in 1962, with hundreds of volunteers serving in education, agriculture, and health sectors until their temporary withdrawal during the civil conflict. Peace Corps operations resumed in 2012. Nepal participates actively in multilateral institutions including the World Bank, IMF, WTO, and regional bodies like SAARC and BIMSTEC. Nepal has embraced the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework and receives substantial multilateral development assistance. Climate change diplomacy has become increasingly important, with Nepal advocating for mountain ecosystem protection in international forums.
