Nepal and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1968, though interactions remained limited for decades. The relationship gained momentum in the 2000s through tourism, mountaineering expeditions, and Spain’s development assistance programs.
Spain has supported projects in rural development, education, and cultural heritage preservation. Current relations are positive though not extensive, with Spain maintaining honorary consular representation in Kathmandu. Trade volumes are modest but growing, primarily consisting of Nepali handicrafts and textiles exported to Spain. Spanish tourism to Nepal has increased steadily, with mountaineering expeditions creating people-to-people connections. Spain has provided humanitarian assistance during natural disasters in Nepal. Educational exchanges are growing, with Spanish universities attracting Nepali students. Both countries cooperate on sustainable development goals and climate action initiatives through EU frameworks.
